This 2022 edition of Stuck on Pause explains how to diagnose if someone is stuck in pause mode, differentiate between biological pause and self-induced pause, and how to treat these two very different conditions.
Being stuck on biological pause requires fulfilling specific assessment processes and making specific neck and spinal movements.

Being stuck on self-induced pause requires learning how to get rid of negative mental habits that keep re-instituting self-induced pause even after it is briefly turned off, and replace those negative habits with mental behaviors that cause a person to feel safe.

This book is a revision of the earlier editions that were posted on this site. Several years of helpful feedback on the earlier editions gave the directions for this newest edition. Test-readers have confirmed that this edition, and particularly the diagnostic flow-chart and the emphasis on self-induced pause being an ingrained mental habit, not a biological condition, is far more clear and more helpful than
previous editions.

As with previous editions, this one is not quite finished (it needs an index and some editing on the final two chapters), but I get so many email enquiries that could be answered with this book that I am posting it even though it is not quite finished. The plan is to have this book finished and even available in hard copy by the
end of 2022.

Yin Tui Na is the Chinese term for light-touch, hands-on medical therapy. This textbook for laymen or students of Chinese medicine explains the theory behind these very simple, elegant techniques. It also explains exactly how much pressure the hands should use, the most comfortable sitting position for the practitioner, and other details for mastering these techniques.

This book includes instruction on Forceless, Spontaneous Release technique (FSR), the technique used by the Parkinson’s Treatment Research Team (1999 to 2013) for treating the unhealed injuries of people with Parkinson’s, as well as an introduction to light-touch craniosacral therapy and other light touch techniques. It also includes Qi Gong techniques that people who have dissociated from injuries can do to accelerate their responses to Yin Tui Na.

The appendices in this book teach how to determine if a person with Parkinson’s has merely dissociated from injuries – usually in childhood – that have eventually set his Parkinson’s in motion, and is therefore a good candidate for Yin Tui Na therapy or if he has created a mental posture – also usually in childhood – that allows him to “rise above” or “be numb to” physical and emotional pain. In the latter case, the person with Parkinson’s will not yet want to receive Yin Tui Na treatment. He will instead want first to read the material in Stuck on Pause, available for free at this website, to turn off this Parkinson’s-creating mindset.

Dr. Janice Hadlock
Raja Books
published 2018, 291 pages.

Link to purchase Tracking the Dragon

This book explains how to feel channel Qi and determine whether or not the channel Qi is flowing the correct way, or flowing in the patterns characteristic of Parkinson’s disease.

Why you might want to read this book

The most common reason that people with Parkinson’s give for wanting to visit our clinic in Santa Cruz, California is “I don’t know anyone who can feel what the energy in the channels is doing.”

Even though recovering from Parkinson’s is, in most cases, a do-it-yourself proposition, many people with Parkinson’s feel that they need to have their energy (channel Qi) assessed by “professionals.” Some people with Parkinson’s are certain they must make the long trek to Santa Cruz to be seen by a (long-retired) member of the Parkinson’s Treatment Team in order to have someone check their electrical channels to a) confirm their diagnosis of Parkinson’s or b) confirm that they are recovering from Parkinson’s.

Therefore, a few chapters of this textbook on detecting the flow of channel Qi are shared here, for free, so that people will not need to come to Santa Cruz to have their channel Qi checked, if they so desire: a friend can learn to detect the flow of channel Qi using these materials and the patient can be assessed without leaving home.

It is extremely easy to learn how to feel the currents that flow in the channels just under the skin. Not only is there no need for a “professional” to do this, there are very few professionals who know howto do this. Although channel theory is the underpinnings of Chinese medicine, the art of detecting the flow patterns of channel Qi is nota part of the standard training for students of Chinese medicine or acupuncturists. In China and in the west, this art is rarely taught.

This book explains how to feel channel Qi and ascertain if it is running correctly. This book has maps of the channels showing the directions in which the currents are supposed to run when a person is relaxed and healthy. Maps showing the directions of channel Qi flow in Parkinson’s, which are quite different, are included in the book Recovery from Parkinson’s.

Nearly anyone who is willing to spend around twenty hours working at it can learn to detect these currents.

Therefore, we have made excerpts from this book downloadable, here, for free. This includes all the chapters of this book that are helpful for the layman who merely wants to learn how to feel the channel Qi in a spouse or friend with Parkinson’s and the appendix that shows how the channels flow in a person who is very healthy.

These free chapters address the subjects of learning how to feel channel Qi, maps of the acupoints and the channels, and just what “channel Qi” is. This is all that a person needs to know if he merely wants to diagnose and determine the status of a person with Parkinson’s.

If you are interested in learning more about channel theory, the whole text book is available in hard copy. The whole book includes chapters explaining the paths of the channels in each of the four neurological modes, case studies, instructions for using channel findings to make a diagnosis and/or determine acupuncture or herbal treatments, and two chapters of instruction on needling scar tissue.

The 2018 edition of Tracking the Dragon is now available.

Long ago, when I released the previous editions of this book, I was very new to writing book-length material. While working on the 2018 edition, now that I have several more books under my belt, I found myself mortified by the poor writing and editing in the earlier editions of this book, to say nothing of the errors. Please forgive me!

This newest edition, in addition to an enormous amount of new information, benefits from better editing: fewer typos, greater clarity, friendlier font, and corrections to errors of understanding dating back to the late 1990s, when the precursor of this book was first released as a study guide for my students.

A special offer: I am so pleased with the new edition that I am offering to send a free replacement copy of the new edition to anyone who bought an earlier edition.

If you would like a replacement copy, please tear off the front cover of your earlier edition and send it, with your mailing address, to Dr. Janice Hadlock, 90 Brookwood Dr., Santa Cruz, CA, 95065, USA.

I request in return that you discard your old edition so that the outdated information and poor writing quality will not spread further. If you have any questions about the book exchange offer, please email me at pdinfo@cruzio.com.

Patient Experiences With Dopamine-enhancing Drugs and Supplements

Dr. Janice Hadlock, DAOM, LAc
Raja Books
published 2003, 639 pages

This book is an in-depth look at Parkinson’s disease medications and the brain chemistry of Parkinson’s.

Parkinson’s patients using L-dopa, dopamine agonists, MAO inhibitors and other dopamine- enhancing drugs and supplements were closely studied as they participated in a four-year research project sponsored by the non-profit Parkinson’s Recovery Project. The unexpected findings of this project have led to an entirely new hypothesis of how these poorly-understood drugs actually work.

Unlike the dominant paradigm’s understanding of these drugs, which holds that these drugs and their traumatic side effects are fairly “unpredictable”, our new hypotheses provide a way of unraveling the true nature of these drugs. This new understanding has enabled us to make accurate predictions about how dosing and rate of dose changes effect people with Parkinson’s.

Our patients were able to discover safe methods for slowly increasing and decreasing drug doses to control the benefits and adverse effects of the medications.

This book also provides case studies that demonstrate the life-threatening dangers that arose when people recovered from Parkinson’s disease while still under the influence of antiparkinson’s drugs or if they had taken the drugs for a significant period of time.

These tragedies of these medication-using patients led to the Parkinson’s Recovery Project’s conclusion that people who have ever used antiparkinson’s medications for more than three weeks might not be suitable subjects for recovery from Parkinson’s. The Parkinson’s Treatment Team (now retired) decided to not work with people who had ever taken dopamine-enhancing antiparkinson’s medications for more than three weeks. This book gives the chilling details on what led to those decisions.

Even so, people who are currently using antiparkinson’s medication and therefore might not be good candidates for recovery, may learn in this book safe methods for changing their doses so that they experience fewer adverse side effects.

Many people who are not using antiparkinson’s medications have found this book very helpful in understanding the chemistry of Parkinson’s disease and how ongoing western medicine brain research supports Asian medical theory.
